Depthy uses Lens Blur’s depth mapping to create a 3D animated image

The new Google Camera app is quite nice. After some time with it, I’ve come to enjoy its simplicity (even if I yearn for more options and features). But one of the best features of the camera is arguably Lens Blur, the new mode that uses depth mapping to properly blur either the background or the foreground of the image.

As explained by Google, Lens Blur uses the motion after capturing the photo to create a 3D depth map, showing how far away each area of the photo is. This allows the software to blur different areas different amounts, depending on how far away they are, for a realistic effect. It works surprisingly well.

However, there is so much more to be done with this feature. For example, a new site called Depthy takes advantage of the depth mapping stored in the photographs to create an awesome 3D effect. The photos taken with Lens Blur don’t even need to be uploaded; the site processes the image from your device. It then outputs an animated version of the photo, where you can control the movement or have it move automatically. Turning off the blur will even reveal parts of the image behind the object.

Depth mapping technology has a lot of potential. Depthy proves that you can do a lot more with it than just add blur. Hit the source link to play with it, and try out some of your favorite Lens Blur photos! Mine definitely came out pretty cool. And share your favorite image for use with Depthy in the comments!
