HP launches the 7 Plus tablet for only $99.99

With the arrival of the Amazon Kindle Fire and the Google Nexus 7, the age of budget tablets dawned. Suddenly, mid-range and high-end tablets could be had for under $400 and tablet manufacturers began to race to beat the prices of their competitors. Fortunately, this race didn’t cause the tablet industry to crash and burn; there have actually been a lot of good (and a lot of bad) tablets that’ve come from that push.

Some manufacturers have realized that they don’t stand a chance in the high-end tablet market, so they’ve decided to start building budget devices. HP is one of them, recently releasing tablets that range from bargain bin to mid-range. The company’s latest effort is a respectable tablet at a very impressive price.

The newly launched HP 7 Plus retails for a low $99.99, undercutting the Nexus 7 by more than half. Of course, that price comes with sacrifices: this tablet features a 1024×600 7-inch display, a 1GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage with a microSD card, a 2,800 mAh battery, a 2-megapixel fixed focus rear camera, a 0.3-megapixel fixed focus front camera, a mono speaker and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. That’s not terribly impressive, but I honestly expected worse for the price.

The HP 7 Plus could be a great tablet for someone that doesn’t need bleeding edge specs and who doesn’t care about raw speed. From the spec sheet, it seems solid and made to last longer than most budget tablets. For us tech enthusiasts, though, the device just won’t cut it. Tell us what you think about this new HP tablet in the comments!
