For years, one of the quiet downsides of owning a Pixel Phone outside its official sales markets has been missing VoLTE, the standard that makes calls sound clear and lets you use data while talking.
Buy an imported Pixel, or travel overseas with one, and you could end up stuck with worse call quality and no fix in sight. That’s finally starting to change for the Pixel 11 series.
Spotted in the Wild First
According to a detailed report by Android Authority, the evidence surfaced from X user akes29, who reported their Pixel 11 Pro running the latest Android 17 beta now supports both VoLTE and 5G on a carrier it was never officially certified for.

The outlet’s contributor AssembleDebug dug into the Pixel 11 firmware directly and confirmed VoLTE is now enabled for China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom, and Hong Kong’s CSL.
The Technology Behind the Fix
This traces back to a partnership Google and the GSMA announced at a streamed event last month, built around the Network Settings Exchange, or NSX, as Android Authority notes.
Instead of Google individually negotiating and testing with every carrier worldwide, carriers can now upload their VoLTE configuration data to one shared hub that Android phone makers pull from directly.
VoLTE won’t necessarily turn on automatically, though.
Google says it stays off by default on unsupported carriers, so you may need to flip it on yourself in settings, at least until Google is confident enough in a carrier’s network quality to enable it automatically in a future update.
The Catch Worth Knowing About
Google has confirmed the NSX approach only applies to the Pixel 11 series and newer, with no current plans to extend it to older phones or Pixel Watches.
That said, Google’s Taesoon Park left the door open, noting the company would consider bringing NSX support to devices like the Pixel 10 and 10a if the system performs better than expected.
Google also says Wi-Fi Calling and VoNR support are next on the roadmap through this same system, laying the groundwork for broader connectivity fixes down the line, potentially for other Android manufacturers too.
